Local communities such as Heriot are hosts to multiple wind farms and, yet have been overwhelmed by a constant stream of additional applications since 2010, according to a recent letter in The Scotsman by John Williams (Chairman of Heriot Community Council).
12 schemes affecting Heriot have gone to public local inquiry, most of which were successfully resisted. Despite this, seven more wind farm proposals are now in the pipeline, along with two major pylon line projects – all using much larger turbines with far greater visual impact across wide areas.
The letter has been written in response to John McLellan’s recent article “Uprising against Renewable Energy” (3 January) highlighting the pressure communities are under in the Scottish Borders.
Many of these issues will be discussed and debated at a convention in Jedburgh Town Hall on 17 January which is open to the public, from 2pm - 4pm.
